Audience Productions Shoots and Scores

This week was incredibly busy, because we picked up a new job that required specific skills and some attention to detail. The unveiling of the new Socceroos kit on behalf of Nike and Getty Images saw us heading over to Walsh Bay.
We had to wake up early to in order to beat the traffic from Audience Productions HQ. When we arrived at our destination it was still too early, so there was time for a quick snooze in the car. In the meantime, the good people from Nike were setting up with a couple of Socceroos – Mark Bresciano and Michael Zullo – on a circle of lawn to take some photos against a backdrop of the most Aussie icon there is: the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Australia has qualified for the 2014 World Cup, 40 years after we first made the grade, and the new kit is inspired by the uniform worn by those very first Cup-chasing Socceroos in 1974.
There was a crowd of media there, and part of our brief was to take shots of the old players from back then. Now, at AP we’re more into NRL than soccer. We’re familiar with the current crop of players, but don’t have that historical knowledge of the sport. The upshot was, we weren’t sure we’d recognise who was who from the 1974 squad, so to be safe we stuck to shooting guys in yellow jerseys, which seemed to work.
In the end, it was lucky we arrived before the media scrum (and cut that snooze short), because we got some footage of Bresciano and Zullo rehearsing the big reveal of the kit. It was a Full Monty-style affair, with them undoing their jackets to show the green’n’gold beneath, and it meant we could cheat some shots in the final edit by using footage from earlier in the morning, before the view was blocked by other cameras and journos. Goal!
We shot about 80 minutes of footage – including an acrobat suspended by wires posing as though he was doing a fly kick, various speeches and the players themselves – and all of that had to be cut down to around 90 seconds of footage. Video here.
That’s our side of the job done. All the Socceroos have to do is bring home the World Cup!
